It is unbelievably romantic to hit a rock, and when it opens, inside that: looking at animals that lived a million, 10 million, 100 million years ago … knowing that nobody had seen that before, and it had been laying without the sun shining on it for 100 or 200 million years!
Paleontology, and within that, vertebrate paleontology is one of the most interesting branches of exploratory fields of research.
With the words of Sir David Attenborough, it is „unbelievably romantic” to hit a rock, and when it opens, inside that „looking at animals that lived a million, 10 million, 100 million years ago” … „knowing that nobody had seen that before, and it had been laying without the sun shining on it for 100 or 200 million years”!
This is one of the experiences which drive paleontologists, including the members of the Hungarian Dinosaur Expedition. Our aim is to collect as much information as possible on the life of long-lost ages and events which occurred a long-long time ago.
The name Hungarian Dinosaur Expedition does not represent only a single field trip for collecting fossils, but instead it stands for a research group which works not only on dinosaurs, but also on the complete fauna and flora of Mesozoic vertebrate localities in Hungary.
Besides the actual fieldworks and excavations, the members of the research group conduct the scientific study, documentation, and publication (in high-ranked scientific journals) of the fossils found at the locality, and introduce their results for the local and international scientific community in conferences.
We consider it important to introduce not only our results, but also to make it available for the public to see the actual, many million year old fossils. Besides being documented in scientific publications and popular scientific press, it is possible to see a part of the finds from the Bakony in the Hungarian Natural History Museum as part of the „Vanished Worlds” permanent exhibition.
Field works, excavations
Fieldwork, discovery is one of the most exciting parts of paleontological research. Breaking down the many millions of years old rocks, fossils become a reality before our eyes.
Processing of fossils
After discovery, the fossils must be released from the enclosing rock by various preparation techniques. This can take months! This is followed by CT examination, geochemical, histological analysis, and 3D visualization of the findings.
Writing scientific publications
The most important and time-consuming part of the research work is the scientific publication of the discovered remains. The purpose of these publications in scientific journals is to publish the most important results that can be read from the findings.
